How can you rank the top 50 films of all time? Hundreds of thousands of movies have been made in the last century, and everybody has their own opinion of which ones are good. Well, that hasn’t stopped the British Film Institute from putting together a list of what it considers to be the top 50 films of all time. Right at the top there’s a surprise — for the first time ever, Citizen Kane is not Number One on the list. It has been replaced by Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo, which the BFI critics now think is the best film of all time. This is a fun list to peruse, and although you’re sure to disagree with some of the choices, you’ll also learn a thing or two about great films you weren’t aware of before. At least 20 percent of the films on this list were ones I’d never heard of, so I have some new items on my video rental list this week.
